Next to Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road, it is the third largest
commercial street in Shanghai. The road was among the first ones
built after Shanghai became an open port in history. The 3.7-km
long street runs from south to north in Hongkou District by
Suzhou Creek. In the
1990s, Sichuan Road, North was remolded on a large scale,
forming today’s modernized shopping street for the general
public, known as the “Shopping Street for the Common People”.
The shops offer a great variety of high-grade and medium-grade
commodities to meet the needs of the common people. There is a
number of famous shops offering special cultural, tourist and
recreational goods. They attract large numbers of Shanghai
citizens and visitors to the city. New buildings like Shanghai
No. 7 Department Store, Duolun, Kailun and Shanghai Spring
Commercial Buildings on Sichuan Road offer all kinds of
high-grade and medium-grade commodities at reasonable prices.
The individuality of the commercial street is “service to the
wage-earning class” with good quality commodities but at
reasonable prices. Diffenrent from Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road
crowded with super fine quality and famous brand shops, Sichuan
Road, North, aiming at “serving the wage-earning class and the
common people” deals mainly in fine quality China-made goods in
support of the national industries. The slogan in the street,
“Visit and walk in other streets but shop in Sichuan Road”
