The reserve is in the east corner of Chongming Island, which has
been formed by silt washed up from the Yangtze River. The total
area is 30, 000 hectares. It is still extending in size by the
washed up silt at a rate of 150 sq. m. a year.
Dongtan was officially opened as a tourist area on Sep.
14, 2002. A giant rock was erected to mark the occasion, a
landing bridge, built reaching out to the shoals, and a bamboo
tower for watching the East Sea in the distance. Tourists may
ride an ox cart on the beaches and take a rest in lounges.
Dongtan is no longer a mystery to visitors.
The natural reserve for protecting migratory birds is the
key tourist attraction on Chongming Island. It is planned to
open a marsh park, an observation tower for watching the rising
or setting sun, a terrace for watching birds and a birds museum.
There will be participatory items by visitors like “visiting
farmer families”. Soon it will become a tourist resort for
sightseeing, relaxation and amusement. |
