 Description:   Standing to the east of Waibaidu Bridge and to the west of Huangpu Park, the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Shanghai was erected in May 1994 to keep alive the memory of the people’s heroes in Shanghai, who laid down their lives during the Opium War, the May 4th Movement, the War Against Japanese Aggression, and the War of Liberation. The Statue of Chen Yi also stands near Huangpu Park. Chen Yi was the first Mayor of Shanghai after the founding of New china as well as a noted Chinese revolutionary, stategist, and one of the founders and leaders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
