The Great World Amusement Centre has a history of over 80 years.
It was first founded in 1917 by Huang Chujiu. The Great World
used to be the most attractive amusement place for the general
public in old Shanghai. There are many small stages showing in
turn all kinds of operas, folk art forms, song and dance and
vaudeville. In the middle of the building is an open-air show of
circling flying ship. There are also a movie house, a shopping
arcade, snack bars and Chinese and Western restaurants. Visitors
can spend a whole day there. Later on, it was seized by power by
an underworld gang leader Huang Jinrong by power and turned it
into a place of evil, thus ruining its reputation as an
amusement centre. After liberation, the Great World was reformed
and turned into a popular place of recreation and leisure for
the people. It is featured for its vaudeville and local operas
of southern and northern China. It entertains Shanghai citizens
and visitors from all places in China with show items suitable
for both the refined and popular tastes and are much appreciated
by the people. The architecture of the Great World is quite
unique; it is a creamy-coloured, multiple-story hexagonal
building, supported by 12 cylindrical columns, with apointed
tower on top. The main building consists of 3 inter-linking
sections of 4 stories. There are 2 affiliated buildings. The
whole layout is something unique and novel. The Great World
Amusement Centre consists of 4 parts: the Amusement World, the
Exposition World, the Stunt World and the Gourmets' World,
offering 8 major series of amusement items. Especially in the
'90s, the Great World Open Challenge and the Genis Record
Challenge Competition have attracted masters of skill from
different places, creating many "onlys" and "firsts" in the
country and in the world. Its strong Shanghai style culture and
recreational facilities in pursuit of the times are attracting
thousands of visitors everyday from home and abroad. |
