Known as the Hall of Sino-Soviet Friendship before 1984,
Shanghai Exhibition Center (built in 1954 with the help of
Soviet specialists to commemorate the victory of Chinese
Communist Party in 1949) and completed in 1955. In 1950s the
building won the name of “the fashion model in the architectural
field”. The whole building is unique and distinctive in
structure, built in Soviet architectural style. The most
magnificent part is its star-topped spire, 106 meters high. The
diameter of the star is 3.5 meters. Standing afar one can see
clearly the gold-coated spire. At night the star flashes,
looking extremely beautiful as if it were a true star in the
sky. In front of the main building is a large fountain, which
was very rarely seen at that time. On important occasions in the
past people far and near came to enjoy the beautiful patterns
formed by the water streams in the fountain. Occupying a total
area of 90,000 sq. m. and located on Nanjing Road (W), opposite
to the famous Shanghai Center, this comprehensive complex
includes many facilities, including a very large show hall,
about 40 show rooms and meeting rooms of different shapes and
sizes, banquet rooms, and a theatre. On the 5th floor is a very
fine Chinese restaurant. The complex also includes two bowling
alleys and some other restaurants. |
