Exit Danfeng Road, turning east onto Middle Fangbang Road at the
old stone archway. Stroll down the boisterous shopping street,
filled with snack stands, clothing shops and booming stereo
systems. As long as the eastern part of town remains standing
over the next few years, there are plenty of little alleyways to
explore here, particularly off to the south. When you reach the
end of Middle Fangbang Road, cross Zhonghua Road (which marks
the eastern boundary of the old city wall) to the Shiliupu
Fabric Market for a tailor-made shirt, dress or jacket.
Having silk shirts, dresses and cashmere coats
tailor-made for a song is one of Shanghai's great indulgences.
This three-storey building, one of several fabric markets in the
city, is conveniently located near the Yuyuan Bazaar. It's a far
cheaper source of silk than places like Silk King, with prices
no higher than Y200 per metre. There are many other types of
fabric here, from wool and velvet to synthetic, but the quality
of the material varies, so shop around. Most places can fill an
order in 24 hours if needed, but it's best to count on at least
three days. |
