Description: |
|
As far back as 1716, Champasak was conveniently seated at the
centre of royalty in the lower Mekong basin. However, the town,
having witnessed a great downturn in fortunes (which according
to the kingdom’s last prince, was caused as a result of a former
queen’s indiscretion), is now a quiet place. At the centre of
the main street is the fountain circle (which no longer houses a
fountain) showcasing a typical example of a past glory and faded
beauty - just as the royal family that once populated the place.
Today, the quiet and dull nature is the very thing that makes
Champasak popular. Because Pakse is the modern capital,
Champasak gets to be the quite country town filled with history
and beauty. Housing a handful of highly regarded boutique
hotels, all on the banks of the Mekong, the focus here is on
tranquility. |
